Laser vaginal rejuvenation addresses multiple concerns

Time has a way of changing everything. We notice the passage of time especially in the changes that occur in our own body. These changes may, at first, be very subtle . . . the occasional realization of a new line on the face or stiffness in joints that once moved easily. The older we are, however, the more our biochemistry is affected. For the woman approaching or in menopause, the dramatic fall in estrogen can lead to a number of symptoms.

Vaginal dryness

Throughout much of a woman’s life, vaginal tissues are nourished and supported by a moisture barrier. While fluctuations in hormones may slightly alter the consistency of moisture in this area, a woman can expect to experience healthy lubrication in which sexual arousal increases the moisture of the vagina. When the body becomes depleted of estrogen, vaginal mucosa is no longer nourished sufficiently for optimal lubrication. Vaginal dryness is not only detrimental to the comfort a woman feels during intercourse but also to her feelings of femininity.

Urinary incontinence

For years, older women have been told that the slight leakage of urine was simply a normal effect of aging. We now know that urinary incontinence may have a link to vaginal atrophy. Poorly supported vaginal tissues that become dry and thin may also be weak due to the lack of nourishment from fresh supplies of collagen.

Additional issues that a woman with atrophic vaginitis may experience include more frequent urinary tract infections, discomfort during urination, and tightening of the vaginal canal that exacerbates the problem of dryness during intercourse.

Laser vaginal rejuvenation

Patients of Dr. Sanjay Gandhi are discovering they have options for handling the various concerns they face as estrogen levels drop.

North Shore Urogynecology is proud to be an accredited center in which MonaLisa Touch laser vaginal rejuvenation may be obtained. This CO2 laser treatment targets tissue in the vaginal walls, making microscopic lesions in a brief, painless procedure. Patients do not require anesthesia and do not need time to recover. After just one treatment, the CO2 laser encourages an increase in healthy new collagen stores in the vaginal mucosa. Better supported, these tissues regenerate and achieve a renewed state of functionality.
