Transvaginal mesh removal takes serious consideration in our Woodstock area offices

Women with stress urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse may struggle with concerns such as discomfort, intense pressure, and urinary leakage. Any one of these problems can lead to embarrassment and can become significant enough to detrimentally impact quality of life. In recent years, the solution to stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapsed was believed to be transvaginal mesh surgery.

Transvaginal mesh removal takes serious consideration in our Woodstock

What we have learned in the past several years is that transvaginal mesh can cause painful complications that may have to be corrected with revision or removal procedures. In the Woodstock, Park City, and Lake Forest offices of Partners in Pelvic Health at North Shore Urogynecology, we give serious consideration to the revision or removal of transvaginal mesh.

Why revise or remove transvaginal mesh

There are several potential complications that may occur with Vaginal Mesh Removaltransvaginal mesh. One concern is that mesh will erode over time. Should erosion occur through the vaginal wall, multiple surgeries could be necessary and even these may not fully correct symptoms. An eroded mesh can also perforate organs in the area of placement.

Another problem that may occur with transvaginal mesh is contraction, or shrinkage, which can affect vaginal tissues and cause intense pain in the pelvic region, painful sexual intercourse, or sexual incapability.

Additional complications that may arise from transvaginal mesh include:

  • Scarring in the vaginal wall
  • Chronic urinary tract infection
  • Persistent problems even with recurrent surgeries

Complications from transvaginal mesh may coincide with the failure to achieve the desired result, which is the repair of incontinence or prolapsed.

Dr. Gandhi is an experience urogynecolist who understands that there are instances in which transvaginal mesh is the most suitable form of treatment. Through discussion and serious consideration, you and your doctor can determine the best course of action to correct pelvic organ prolapsed or stress urinary incontinence.

When possible, conservative methods of treatment are attempted before surgical solutions. We may guide you in the proper performance of Kegel exercises or may provide treatment in the way of electrical stimulation of pelvic muscles.

Dr. Gandhi can address problems typically treated with transvaginal mesh as well as problems that have occurred as a result of transvaginal mesh. At Partners in Pelvic Health and North Shore Urogynecology, we offer compassionate care for your health concerns.
