Recovering well after various types of slings insertion near Crystal Lake

Dr. Sanjay Gandhi and his staff of experienced, compassionate professionals help women regain confidence to engage in life when affected by urinary incontinence. At North Shore Urogynecology, we can help you maintain pelvic health and address a number of specific concerns. For patients affected by urinary incontinence, we may begin by discussing and implementing a variety of non-surgical treatment options. When necessary, we will discuss the types of slings used in our Crystal Lake facility, and take this approach to correction if deemed most appropriate.

various types of slings insertion

Mid-urethral slings can be very effective at reducing or eliminating urinary incontinence. Through a short surgical procedure, which is performed on an outpatient basis, the bladder is given the support it needs for better function. Although a common and quick procedure, treatment with a sling is surgical, and does require some steps for optimal recovery.

Recovery from sling surgery can be quite restful and should not pose a great deal of stress on the patient. We discuss the details of surgery and recovery well in advance, and encourage patients to, above all, listen to what their body is saying to them following their treatment. Rushing back into the full swing of life after intervention for urinary incontinence may reduce the effectiveness of results and would certainly be unfortunate.

Factors to a smooth recovery

One of the biggest factors in recovery from any surgery is smoking. Patients planning surgical procedures are encouraged to stop the use of tobacco products for at least a few weeks before their procedure. This time allows the natural detoxification process to remove harmful chemicals from the body. Avoidance of tobacco products should continue for at least a week or two following the insertion of a mid-urethral sling, so that chemicals do not inhibit the healing process.

The surgical procedure in which a sling is placed makes only a few small incisions, and recovery should be quite comfortable. To keep discomfort to a minimum, your doctor will likely prescribe pain-reducing medication for use in the first weeks after treatment. It is important to take pain medication as prescribed, rather than waiting to see if discomfort occurs, at least for a few days.

Though physical limitations after surgery are only minor, the recommendations of your doctor must be adhered to. After surgery, only light objects should be lifted. This means getting down to your child’s level rather than lifting him or her to yours. Chores such as shopping or taking out the trash should be shared among family members so that you do not put your recovery at risk by lifting bags too heavy for your current situation.

There are various tips for surgical recovery that are discussed during your visits leading up to your procedure. We are also available by phone throughout your treatment, and we will follow up with you regularly to ensure your body is healing well.
