Bloating

Digestive issues such as bloating, gas, stomachaches and cramping can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Patients who struggle with these conditions regularly may be seeing the signs of a more serious, underlying condition. Temporary problems are oftentimes addressed with over-the-counter medications and a change in the foods a patient eats. Patients with long-term issues are encouraged to see a professional for treatment.

Patients with long-term bloating concerns may want to seek the care and treatment of an urogynecologist such as Dr. Gandhi of Partners in Pelvic Health North Shore Urogynecology. His practice is focused on urological and gynecological care, and he can help patients find relief for many pelvic health concerns.

Temporary bloating can happen due to certain foods and intolerance issues. Lactose and fructose intolerance can result in extreme bloating, as can certain foods such as broccoli, beans, and onions. Patients will know the culprit when they experience bloating shortly after consuming certain foods. Lactose and fructose intolerance can be addressed by avoiding certain foods and drinks that may cause the problem.

Another common intestinal disorder that can result in bloating and stomach issues is IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome. This condition causes patients to have a number of unwanted bowel problems, including constipation, diarrhea, fecal urgency, stomach pains and cramps, and gas. The cause of IBS is still undetermined, but it is believed that it is caused by hormones, emotional stress, and improper nerve signals in the brain.

When bloating occurs with other more serious conditions such as blood in the stool, unwanted weight loss, and anemia, it may be a sign of another medical problem. In some cases, this may trigger a suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease or colon cancer, and it should be evaluated as soon as possible to rule out these serious conditions. However, most patients with temporary bloating and gas may find that over-the-counter solutions and a change in diet can address the problem.
