Vaginal Discharge

At all points in a woman’s life, vaginal discharge can occur. This discharge is a combination of cells and fluids that are shed from the vaginal area to keep the area clean and protected. Vaginal discharge can occur at all points of the reproductive cycle. Healthy discharge will appear white or clear, while other colors and strong odors may indicate a more serious problem. When this occurs in conjunction with discomfort, itching, or swelling, it may be a symptom of a condition requiring proper treatment. Unusual vaginal discharge may be a sign of conditions such as:

  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Cancer of the vagina or cervix
  • Yeast infection
  • HPV infection
  • Pregnancy
  • PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease)

When an unusual vaginal discharge occurs, it is essential that a woman seeks medical attention. Thick discharge that is green, yellow, or red in color should be examined, and any discharge that is accompanied with a strong odor may be a sign of a medical concern. When patients are experiencing burning, irritation, and itching of the vaginal area, treatment should be considered.

Dr. Gandhi understands normal and abnormal vaginal discharge and can assist patients who are concerned with changes in their body’s functions. When a discharge occurs, it is not always a sign of a serious problem. The body naturally flushes out the vaginal area and discharge that is white or clear is perfectly normal and part of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It may increase during pregnancy, times of emotional stress, sexual excitement, breastfeeding, and when hormonal medications are taken. However, when the discharge changes and other symptoms such as discomfort and odor are present, a visit to Partners in Pelvic Health North Shore Urogynecology is appropriate.

Contact Dr. Gandhi of Partners in Pelvic Health North Shore Urogynecology today to schedule an appointment and share your concerns about your pelvic health. Your health care provider may suggest that further testing be completed to confirm a diagnosis of a more serious concern for effective treatment to reduce discomfort and unusual vaginal discharge.
