A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) could be painful, disruptive and recurring.
Any part of the urinary system is vulnerable – bladder, urethra, kidneys or ureters.
Common UTIs – Cystitis (bladder infection normally caused by E. coli bacteria), Urethritis (urethra infection caused by GI bacteria which can spread from anus to urethra)
Bacterial infections in the lower urinary tract are common and can happen at any age.
Symptoms – strong urge to urinate but little urine passed, burning sensation during urination, cloudy and smelly urine, pelvic pain
A woman has a 50% chance of getting one at some point in her life.
Why are women vulnerable? Shorter urethra, sexual activity can introduce the bacteria to the urinary system, certain birth control methods, lower estrogen levels after menopause
How to reduce your risk – drinking plenty of liquids, avoiding use of irritating products in the area, wiping the area from front to back, using safe birth control methods, emptying bladder after intercourse
