What is a sling Crystal Lake
Stress urinary incontinence, in which urine leaks from the bladder when one laughs, coughs, sneezes, or performs some other physical activity, is a condition that can leave a women feeling frustrated and embarrassed. This condition, which affects women far more often than men, may be associated with pregnancy and childbirth, weight, and aging.
What is a “bladder sling”?
In our Crystal Lake pelvic health practice, Dr. Gandhi sees many women treated with bladder slings, or more accurately urethral slings. This procedure is performed using either synthetic material or biologic tissue. Traditionally, referred to as a “pelvic hammock” or “bladder lift,” a sling is placed under the midurethra to recreate support, helping the urethra close during activities. This support stops urine leakage with exercise and urine leakage with coughing and sneezing.
Three types of urethral slings have been used to treat stress urinary incontinence. The original surgical treatment was the tension-free vaginal tape (TVT), which was followed by the transobturator tape sling, or TOT / TVT-O. Finally, in 2006, the mini-sling was developed. There is controversy as to which procedure is superior, and Dr. Gandhi is an expert who can clearly explain the differences to you.
Despite all of the press coverage of vaginal mesh complications and the numerous advertisements in the media from attorneys, midurethral slings continue to be FDA approved and are an outstanding way to treat stress urinary incontinence in carefully selected women.
Sling patients needn’t suffer ongoing physical and emotional discomfort due to the side effects of ineffective treatment.
