Details on Botox treatment for bladder problems in our Lake Forest practice
Partners in Pelvic Health at North Shore Urogynecology offers a number of solutions for patients with bladder control problems. As much as possible, Dr. Gandhi prefers to provide non-surgical treatments based on a patient’s specific needs. For those who have tried anticholinergic medication without optimal results, Botox may be a potential treatment option. We understand that patients facing treatment for bladder problems in our Lake Forest, Woodstock, or Park City office feel more comfortable when they know what to expect.
In order to determine the suitability of Botox for urinary incontinence, Dr. Gandhi will perform a comprehensive consultation and specific diagnostic tests called urodynamics. These will measure:
- Involuntary contractions of the bladder muscles as the bladder fills
- Pressure within the bladder as it fills and empties
- Bladder capacity
- The amount of urine left in the bladder after urination
If Botox is determined to be suitable treatment for urinary incontinence, the patient is advised to stop taking aspirin and other antiplatelet medications in the three days prior to treatment. Antibiotics may be prescribed as a preventive measure, decreasing the risk of urinary tract infection after treatment. Dr. Gandhi will also discuss potential side effects, and confirm the patient’s willingness to perform self-catheterization if necessary after treatment. Instructions on how to perform bladder emptying with catheterization will be given.
On the day of treatment, a simple test is performed to confirm bladder health. Treatment cannot be performed if an active urinary tract infection exists. If anesthesia has been chosen, this will be administered to numb the bladder before Botox injections.
After treatment, the patient will remain in our office for thirty minutes, during which pulse and blood pressure will be checked. Further urodynamic testing may be performed to assess the presence of urine in the bladder after urination. The patient may be advised to continue use of antibiotics to prevent urinary tract infection.
